The Manhattan Beach Open has been played here since 1960. Winners get their names on a plaque set into the pier. It is the closest thing beach volleyball has to a cathedral.
Ninety-three nets between the pier and the county line, more than anywhere else on the California coast, and on a Saturday morning every one of them is taken.
